ВАШИНГТОН, 26 мар - РИА Новости, Алексей Богдановский. Супруга российского бизнесмена Михаила Ходорковского судится в США с автором и режиссером пьесы "Клептократия", которые изобразили ее "проституткой и убийцей", говорится в документах суда.
Ходорковская подала иск о защите чести и достоинства в федеральный суд столичного округа Колумбия, требуя с ответчиков - автора пьесы Кеннета Лина и Жаклин Гэй - возмещения в размере 75 тысяч долларов плюс судебные издержки. Пьеса "Клептократия" Лина ранее была поставлена в одном из столичных театров и получила прохладные отзывы критиков. Лин известен тем, что выдвигался на премию "Эмми" за сценарий к нескольким сериям сериала "Карточный домик".

Kenneth Lin wrote for “House of Cards” back when “House of Cards” was cool. But what denizens of our town know is that, for the terrifying and the bizarre, there ain’t nothin’ like the real thing, baby. So in Kleptocracy, Lin has written about the rise and fall of Mikhail Khodorkovsky (Max Woetendyke) who, for one brief moment, was the richest man in Russia until a certain politician named Vladimir Putin (Christopher Geary) became his enemy. And in Arena’s fine world premiere, the story is canny, thoughtful, and exciting, in ways that real life seldom is.

Is Vladimir Putin box-office poison? In a new play, he’s certainly toxic enough.

The image that stays with you longest in “Kleptocracy,” Kenneth Lin’s stark but emotionally colorless new play about the multifarious corruptions of Vladimir Putin’s Russia, is one of Putin himself, as a butcher. That’s not even treated as a metaphor in this Arena Stage world premiere: In the guise of serpentine actor Christopher Geary, Putin stands before us in a blood-soaked apron, wielding a cleaver and cutting up a thick slab of red meat.
Other incidents in Lin’s tale, which is centered on Putin’s obsessive persecution of oligarch Mikhail Khodorkovsky (Max Woertendyke), bear the earmarks of Shakespeare-proven devices. One of these depicts the ghost of an assassinated provincial mayor (Elliott Bales), wandering into Khodorkovsky’s prison cell, still bearing his grotesque fatal head wound, to torment the inmate with the memories of his incriminating transgressions.

Greed, manipulation, duplicity, the building blocks of a new play in the nation's capital.
Those are themes that come up a lot these days, but, in this case, the setting is Russia more than 20 years ago.

Kenneth Lin's Kleptocracy offers clever politics, but is let down by cheap imagery and a bland central performance

Intended as a darkly wry, mildly existential commentary on the rise of Vladimir Putin amid the excesses of the Russian oligarchs, Kenneth Lin’s Kleptocracy (★★) is clever but somewhat hard to pull off.
There is a strong narrative thread here with Lin’s vignettes essentially tracking the meteoric rise of oil-tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky and the arrival on the political scene of the seemingly mild-mannered former KGB agent Putin. While Khodorkovsky gets richer and more politically ambitious, Putin becomes subtly ominous, coming and going like the Grim Reaper at a party, dropping sometimes clever, sometimes obtuse clues to a puzzle only a Russian could understand. When the United States tries to negotiate a lucrative deal with Khodorkovsky, ideologies collide like grinding gears and Putin reveals himself to be a lot smarter and more ruthless than perhaps anyone expected.
